Heidi and Helmut Lang farm a property north of Lumby on Mabel Lake Road. They raise chickens, pigs, cows, sheep, and grow vegetables.
Cederstein supplies the Co-op with tasty certified organic vegetables. Heidi has been growing vegetables for 7 years now and enjoys experimenting with different varieties. She grows many heirloom varieties, and selects the best ones for the best taste.
The Langs came to Lumby in 1990 after finding an ad in a Swiss newspaper advertising a farm for sale in the area. They decided to settle down in the beautiful Mabel Lake Valley. Heidi and Helmut both have a horticultural background. Heidi grow bedding plants and Helmut grow caliper trees. There property is now dotted with lovely deciduous trees that they planted together. Helmut also is breeding and grafting apple and walnut varieties.

Meet Britta Fournier of Cederstein Farm outside of Lumby. Cederstein is an organic vegetable and meat farm located on the way to Mabel Lake. It is owned and operated by Heidi and Helmut Lang.
Britta has been helping Heidi this year. Here is her story:
Britta is relatively new to farming. Growing up, her family had a small backyard garden with beans, tomatoes, and leafy greens. Her interest in organic farming blossomed when she met her current partner, who grew up at Cedarstein Farm. During a summer working on an organic mixed vegetable farm in Enderby, Britta learned the mechanics of small-medium scale vegetable farming.
Britta studied Environmental Science at the University of Guelph and spent 10 years tree planting. During the Winter she works full time as a tail guide and snowcat operator at Mustang Powder Cat Skiing.
Organic farming is important to her because she believes that food produced organically is healthier for people and the environment. Britta also believes that local food producers are essential for food security.
Cedarstein supplies our Co-op with certified organic tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, garlic, kale, and romaine lettuce.
When asked why he likes our Co-op, Britta stated: “The Monashee Coop is a strong supporter of local producers. I’ve enjoyed watching them grow over the past few years.”
